Small Town Character Defines Historic County Seat

The town of Columbus serves as the county seat and the gateway to the area’s picturesque horse farms. The weekly farmers market showcases the bounty of area farms, many of which are part of the foothills dedication to the slow food movement.  In town, the main streetscape features Stearns building which houses the Polk County Board of Education. It is the town center park with gazebo and hosts festivals throughout the year. Polk County Courthouse, finished in 1857, is one of the oldest still in use in North Carolina. Columbus is home to the House of Flags, the only flag museum in the country.
